Folk Erotica - the book that started it all!

Okay, well maybe not started it ALL...

In my past of sexual curiosity, first there was finding in my parent's sock drawer the book: "The Story of O. " Then, in middle school my friend and I read a sex case study textbook that belonged to her father - he was a student.

But, then in college I heard of a book that was kept  "under the desk" because it's subject matter caused it to be stolen if left on the shelves.  The book had to be requested the from the librarian on duty at the desk and then signed out to be viewed in the library only.

Of course, I HAD to see it! And when I saw it, I was fascinated that it existed! A visual history of what goes on behind closed doors, and proof that people have always been kinky!

An examination of the book in the next post.

But if you can't wait, you can buy it here.

A Note About The Images

Whenever I am able I will use images from Wikimedia Commons. Not only are the images available for free use, but the images are varied and beautiful!

So, a little information on previously used images:

The photo above dates from the 1920s by the photographer Lucien Walery. From Wikipedia Commons: Lucien Walery (1863-1935) stands out in the night lights of Paris because he photographed an extraordinary number of beautiful women from most of the particular risque dance revues from the early 1900's through the 1920's.
It appears that there were 2 or even 3 photographers who used the label "Walery" to identify their photographs. The elder was Count Stanislaw Julian Ostrorog (1830-1890), born in Mohylewo, Lithuania. He became a British citizen in 1862, and set up a studio in London, in 1883. Stanislaw Ostrorog used the pseudonym of Walery which he adapted from his wife's name, Waleria. After his death in 1890, his son Stanislaw Julian Ignacy, Count Ostrorog (1863-1935) continued the studio of his father, combining (between 1890-1900) with Alfred Ellis to become Ellis and Walery. Walery is known for his famous portraits of Queen Victoria.
The younger Count Ostrorog is often confused with Lucien Waléry, who lived and worked in Paris in the period 1900-1930, and is known for his photographs of dance revue ladies. a.o. Mata Hari and Josephine Baker. Lucien signed his photographs "Waléry - Paris", "Yrélaw", or "Laryew". Some believe that Lucien is the same as the younger Count Ostrorog, who is supposed to have moved to Paris, around 1900. More likely Lucien is altogether a different person.

This image from 1808 is an illustration of a type of corset.

From a Cracked article: The 9 Most Devastating Insults From Around the World By Ian Cheesman

"Wear a green hat" This doesn't sound particularly offensive until you understand that green hats were a component of the male brothel workers uniform during the Tang dynasty. These brothels were so prominent that some historians speculate the Tang dynasty was actually named after the amount of poozle they serviced rather than the emperor's family. References to green hats can challenge the fidelity of someone's wife or suggest someone's father is an anonymous man whore.

I feel some research coming on!
